BADAGRY BLACK HERITAGE MUSEM
Black Heritage Museum
The Badagry Black Heritage Museum located in the former district officer’s office built in 1863, houses hundreds of artefacts and historical relics that detail over 300 years of the movement of slaves through Lagos. From the early 1500s, Badagry was one of many trading and transport areas in West Africa for slaves being sold off to America. It is estimated that roughly 550,000 African slaves sailed through this area.
Heritage Museum takes tourists on a journey to Nigeria’s slave past. Its nine galleries tell this tale using artefacts like trade documents, dated shackles, sketches, photos, sculptures, and other salvaged historical records that chronicled Badagry’s dark past. Another good thing about visiting this place is that the whole of Badagry is a living museum; you can learn the role the town played during the slave trade just by being there.
ALHAJI WILLIAMS ABASS BARACOON
Alhaji William Abass Barracoon
To be honest, I didn’t know what to feel when I got here, it was a feeling 0f betrayal but yet open mindedness. We meet a tour guide with a direct lineage to Seriki Williams Abass. He takes us to the first location – Seriki Williams Abass home, where many relics, including his grave, are preserved. According to him, Brazillian Slave merchants constructed this Slave cell around 1840, using it to keep dozens of captives for up to 120 days. In 2003, this construction was declared a National Monument.
Displayed are chains of different sizes, for children, for those labelled weak and larger chains, called “heavy chains”, for the stronger captives. Most prisoners died due to heat and illness, as there was only one mediocre square opening at the higher part of one wall, about 40cm wide, safeguarded by about six iron rods to serve as ventilation. They had a metal bucket and another large ceramic jar to serve as a toilet—the rest you can imagine.
At the entrance to the Salve cell stood an umbrella. It did not seem regular, so I asked our guide more about it. He explained how this good was used as means of exchange during the trade era. The umbrella was not regular. It was massive but old, made of goldish and purple jacquard mixed with golden embroidered flowers, with a robust wooden pole in the middle. The top of the wooden bar had a brass casing that served to beautify it. This piece of handwork was worth 40 human souls.
MOBEE ROYAL SLAVE MUSEUM
Mobee Royal Slave Museum
The Mobee Royal Family Original Slave Relics Museum is a small museum housed in a nineteenth century colonial building. It showcases the role of the local 'Chief Mobee' in the enslavement of local Africans during the transatlantic slave trade, as well as the role of his son (and successor) in abolishing slavery in the area.
The museum houses one exhibition which discusses the arrival of Europeans to the Badagry area and the origins of the trade in human beings. Artefacts highlight the brutal nature of the capture and the enslavement of African people. These include yokes, chains, a mouth lock that presented the captives from speaking, and handcuffs for children. Other objects are examples of trade goods that were received by the Chief in exchange for a supply of people. Text interpretation also provides visitors with information about the terrible conditions faced by the enslaved during the Middle Passage, and images provide representations of life on the plantations.
POINT OF NO RETURN
Slave Port
Gberefu Island also known as Point of No Return is a populated historical island located in Badagry, a town and local government area of Lagos State, South-Western Nigeria. Symbolized by two poles slightly slanted towards each other and facing the Atlantic Ocean, the island was a major slave port after it was opened in 1473 during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade era.] According to Nigerian historians, as many as 10,000 slaves were believed to have been shipped to the Caribbean and Americas between 1518 and 1880 from the island. There's a mystery well before the slave port at the island that captured slave must drink from to forget his or her home. This is must visit to all blacks outside Africa to know their root.
THE FIRST STORE BUILDING
First Store Building
It was said that the ancient structure was erected by Reverend Henry Townsend of the Church Missionary Society (CMS). The structure was occupied by Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African C.M.S Bishop when he undertook the translation of the Holy Bible from English to Yoruba. The First Storey Building in Nigeria is located in Badagry, Lagos State . It attracts many visitors every year. The foundation of the building was laid in 1842 while the house was completed in 1845. The one-storey building has its corrugated iron sheet roof overlooking the marina waterfront. It is the most popular mission house in Badagry because the first sets of missionaries in Nigeria settled at the building. The rooms has six big rooms, four stores, two big sitting rooms, and a safe where precious items are kept. History also has it that it was a place where returnee slaves lodged. Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a returnee slave lived in one of the rooms of the building. From the outside, the building looks old and frail but the wooden staircase looks as strong as ever. In the upper floor of the building, there is a glass containing the English and Yoruba versions of the bible that was translated by Bishop Ajayi Crowther.
